Airbox / Air intake and Filter mods?

Hey all, I'm wondering what mods (if any) others have done for some cheap performance increases. What I'd like to know is are there any mods to the airbox or intake that can be done or even something as simple as an after market filter (K&N) or even pod filters? Any help would be great. Cheers

In a word, no. The stock intake is already pretty good.

The stock system is fine, you will not get any gain aside from induction noise with mods, many mods will cut back power

Righto, thanks for the replies. Good to know that I don't need to spend any more money. I've got plans for some HM Headers fairly soon and I guess that is all that is needed. Cheers.

Yeah good idea there mate with the HM's. That along with ralliart cams and a 98 tune are all you can really do to improve performance at a reasonable price.
But even with those 3, its not going to make it into a rocket ship. Will just give you a bit more torque really.

In that case then why the NZ Diamante with the different snorkel produced more power and torque? Theirs do not go over the radiator, but go around the battery to the plastic shield next to the radiator. Quite a few of us have cut a hole their and either added another hose to the airbox (myself) or removed the snorkel and replaced with hose to the same place. Do a search and you'll find pics.

I have the NZ intake fitted, I've noticed pick up in midrange torque and top end power, in the respect that the car doesn't drop off the power band so noticeably between 5500-6800rpm any more. Depending on the weather it almost doesn't drop off at all now. If you can source one I'd suggest doing it.

The NZ CAI was a dealer fitted std pre delivery mod in NZ on ALL NZ sold TL and TW models supposedly delivering an extra 4Kw. I think this was probably only with bit of imagination, NZ winter induction temps and the better flowing FWD headers with VRX sports muffler. The factory instructions which I got off Ego requires the TL/TW air shroud near the radiator to be trimmed to allow greater airflow and many Aussie members who jumped on board and sourced them through NZ experienced no gains in their TJ's and earlier models as the battery box arrangement and grille are quite different interfering with the cool air delivery they are intended for. The instructions also require the engine side of trhe TL airbox to be trimmed (it came with the cut out template) for the CAI which looks simliar to a 2 stroke motorcycle exhaust system with a 'power bulge'. It attaches to the std airbox and picks up cool air behind the LHS headlight. I have one on my TL VRX AWD and it certainly makes removing the aircleaner etc a quick proposition compared to the stock intake. As I fitted HM headers to my Redline racing 100cpi cat with my stock VRX muffler I think it cannott hurt. They went for about A$120 at the time.
I still have a spare one I never fitted to my 2003 TJ AWD.
